“I think there is only one quality worse than hardness of heart and that is softness of head.”

–Theodore Roosevelt

You need a healthy heart to care, to understand what others are struggling with, to rise to occasions that are daunting. Soft heads are gullible, vulnerable, and ready to accept what anyone hands to it. Strong-hearted and hard-headed gets the job done. The former gets you to care about solutions to problems, even those that don’t directly affect you, and the latter insists you accept only what is to the purpose and effective.

Thought of the Day (TOD) is selected by Rick Larios, Monday-Friday, minus public holidays and an arbitrarily chosen summer vacation. Often, but not always, a comment comes with the quote. TOD originates as a personal email list-sharing and is further shared here with permission. A poem appears in full on Fridays; the copyright belongs to the poet and/or publisher. Buy poetry you like.
